After an intense debate, the Chicago City Council approved the plan for support cards for gasoline and public transportation.
Under the Chicago Moves program, the city will issue 50,000 prepaid gas cards that go from $60602 to $100,000 prepaid transit of $50.
According to Univision, Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan was approved with a vote of 26-23 and the gas giveaway was changed to win crucial support from three councilmembers, allowing the measure to pass.
This new version was extended to cover the parts of the orange city, the rest will be distributed equally between each neighborhood and the previous version only dedicated the 75 % of the gift cards to the areas in red.
Although the s cards will be issued to residents, they must meet a couple of requirements such as: be residents of Chicago, have at least 14 years of age and a family income equal to or less than 100 % of the median income in the Chicago area.
For those who apply To have a gas card they must have a valid and unexpired city sticker.
According to the office of Some Lightfoot prepaid cards will be distributed by lottery throughout the city. The first lottery will be held in the second hand of the month from May to September.
The winners of the draw will be able to receive the Chicago Moves card by mail, to avoid long lines at the offices.
Residents can now apply for the Chicago Moves program online, but if they want to apply in person they can go to the Chicago Public Library or by mail by sending a completed application to ATTN: Dept. of Finance: Chicago Moves, 121 N. LaSalle St., 7th Floor, Chicago, IL 60602.
Lightfoot knows that with these cards problems are eliminated, but they are minimized: “Are we solving all the problems with this? Of course not, it is a modest program. But to suggest that it’s a trick, it’s a trick, it’s the mayor’s policy, let’s put all that nonsense aside.”
