The world of cycling will once again enjoy the talent of Egan Bernal, after it was confirmed that he will be available to compete at the end of May. Likewise, the Colombian undertook his course to Monaco to continue complying with several parameters of his recovery.
Gustavo Uriza, doctor who treated the cyclist from 20 years, was the one who confirmed the return of Egan Bernal, after being fully recovered from his odontoid fracture, which he suffered when he crashed with a bus and thanks to several operations and his rehabilitation, he will once again be able to enjoy what he is most passionate about.
“This weekend I will be cycling in Europe as soon as I get off the plane, it is the first thing I go to do. In fact, I am going to travel with my dad so that he can accompany me on the motorcycle in case I have a problem”, commented Egan Bernal in a virtual conference of the National Academy of Medicine.
“I love you all comment that the odontoid fracture is completely consolidated and since it was done with a transodontoid screw, then there is no involvement of the craniocervical junction; that is, he is cured”, commented Gustavo Uriza.
Bernal has been carrying out small training sessions with the mission of adapting to his body again, after several surgeries. Although on different occasions he has reiterated his desire to compete again despite not being able to finish all the races.
“It all depends on Dr. Uriza to see what he says. That does not depend on me; For me I would already be competing, I’m putting on a number and I’m going to compete. I’m sure I wouldn’t finish the races yet, but just putting a number on the shirt will be very exciting and that will be the motivation when I get to Europe“, continued the Colombian cyclist.
Likewise, Dr. Gustavo Uriza also wanted to make it clear that the South American cyclist will not be able to compete in major races, at least for now. That is to say, he will not be in the Tour de France, but in other races that will serve to carry out his return.
“From the day 120 of the accident, Egan can torque, stand on pedals and race fit. His coaches in Europe must now give the go-ahead, but from my side he can now compete”, concluded Gustavo Uriza.
In this way, the world of cycling is preparing to receive one of the the best athletes in the world and for Colombia. In addition, his return will be very satisfactory due to the dangerous injury that cost the race to a cyclist who only has 25 years.
