This Wednesday, the chief medical adviser to the president of the United States, Anthony Fauci, indicated that the United States had already left behind the Covid pandemic phase to move to the endemic phase, after registering low levels of infections, deaths and hospitalizations.
“Certainly now we are in this country outside the pandemic phase, that is, we do not have 900,000 new daily infections nor tens and tens and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. We are at a low level now,” Fauci said in an interview with the CBS television network.
Despite considering that the country is out of the pandemic phase, Fauci said that he does not believe that the coronavirus will be eradicated.
“What we can maintain a very low level and vaccinate people intermittently, I don’t know how often, it could be every year, or even more time to maintain the low level, but now we are not in the pandemic phase in the country ” , he remarked.
However, he pointed out that if the world situation is observed, “there is no doubt that the pandemic continues”, since, he explained, there are still very rapid and widespread infections in different parts of the world.
WHO parameters to go from Covid pandemic to endemic
There are 4 points that the World Health Organization (WHO) considers to say that a country has made the transition from pandemic to endemic and are:
1) High response capacity (Hospital occupancy of 2%)
2) High vaccination coverage (90% of coverage in people older than 18 years)
3) Very few deaths detected (Average of 4 deaths per day)
4) Few positive cases detected (Average of 292 infections per day)
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), new daily cases of Covid-19 in the US are not exceeding 60,000 in April, after the rebound suffered in January by the Ómicron variant where one million new infections per day were exceeded.
Similarly, deaths from the disease show a downward trend with less than 500 daily, and even with figures below 100 on some days.
