Some videos have gone viral on social networks showing a technique called “fractal wood burning”, in which a way of treating and decorating wood is shown and which has captivated millions of people who try to replicate it. .
However, according to People magazine, a couple from Wisconsin died after trying to replicate this viral method of treating and decorating wood.
Tanya Rodríguez, 44 years old, and James Carolfi, 52 years old, were found dead at the beginning of this month of April after a fire broke out in his home. The investigation after the event to clarify the causes of the incident and that has been made public recently has determined that both died accidentally electrocuted. The fire would have occurred in the garage, where they were carrying out the aforementioned technique, and spread from there to the rest of the house.
The statement issued by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office explains that what this method does is “fractal wood burning” and therefore, the use of of high voltage electricity together with a chemical solution that is applied to the wood so that a specific pattern can be obtained.
“Through the investigation, it was determined that the fire started in the garage before spreading into the house. We believe that the fractal wood-burning equipment that caused the electrocutions probably caused the structure fire,” explained the sheriff’s office, which has determined that the deaths were “accidental in nature.”
Given this terrible accident, the county authorities have alerted the population about the dangers of burning fractal firewood, a practice that has gained popularity on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook or YouTube.
According to data published by Insider, citing data from the American Association of Woodturners, they assure from 2017 have recorded at least 37 deaths related to the use of this technique.
