After a breakup, some people use food to “feed” a broken heart. According to one analysis, people in the United States often find a greasy sandwich comforting.
To find out what are the most popular foods Americans eat after a breakup, USA RX conducted an analysis of data from a year’s search on Google Trends, from April 2021 to April 2022 and the results return 23 different breakup dishes and seven of them are the most popular, including sweet and salty foods.
7 most popular foods to eat after a breakup
Hamburgers and sweets
Hamburgers and sweets share the first place. Each is the favorite food for breakups in five states across the country.
Burgers were a favorite in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada and Oregon. Sweets were preferred by people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, Montana, and Indiana.
Second place was shared by five foods:
Cake, soup, chicken noodles, grilled cheese, smoothies and pizza.
Unconventional trends
Some foods that are most popular after a breakup in some states are probably not the conventional “remedies” to comfort yourself after the end of a love relationship.
Shakes are popular in the southern states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Tacos are a favorite in Texas, the land of Tex-Mex cuisine, and in Nevada .
Ramen is most popular in Hawaii, French toast in Delaware, and waffles in Washington.
Emotional eating
The need to eat certain foods to feel better, to satisfy Eating emotional needs, and not because you are hungry, is described as emotional eating. They tend to reach for junk food, sweets and other comforting but unhealthy foods.
Not only do they turn to food when they are sad, but also when they are angry, bored, afraid or anxious . The Mayo Clinic notes that emotional eating is eating as a way to suppress or calm negative emotions.
Emotional eating does not provide lasting relief, it can lead to overeating and weight gain.
The Mayo Clinic advises that instead of snacking when you’re not hungry, distract yourself and substitute healthier behavior, such as going for a walk, watching a movie, playing with your pet, listening to music, reading, leaning on family and friends.
It is also recommended not to store hard-to-resist comfort foods. To stop emotional eating, you may also consider joining a support group.
