In recent weeks, the rumors of a possible break between Andy Ruiz Jr. and the Canelo Team were big and obvious, no one spoke about it while the ‘Destroyer’ was away from the gym led by coach Eddy Reynoso. Now the boxer himself was in charge of settling the speculations and announced that he will return.
Ruiz Jr. has already resolved the dilemma of his next fight and it will be in August in the Crypto.com Arena in California against Cuban Luis “King Kong” Ortiz. He will mean his official return to the ring after defeating Chris Arreola on May 1, 2021.
This week the Mexican offered an exclusive interview with the ESNEWS media outlet and explained that his absence from the Canelo Team was not due to problems with Saúl or Eddy: “All the race that thinks that I am not with Eddy , but we are. I wanted to have my gym to myself, to be focused on everything.”
He wants comfort in his own space and he set about it , but stated that he will return to work with the current best boxing trainer in the world.
“In two more weeks I will be back with Eddy Reynoso already training. I know there are a lot of people talking shit, you left Canelo’s gym. No, I just wanted to have my place because Canelo and Eddy go to his house and rest. I made my own place to be fit and ready,” he added.
At 32 years old Ruiz Jr. knows what it means to be a WBA (Super) world champion, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweights, then lost those belts to Anthony Joshua. After that loss he went to the Canelo Team in 2021 to look for the titles again.
He acknowledged that Reynoso can help him come out of his fight against ‘King Kong’ Ortiz: “Of course I’m going to come back. Eddy is an extraordinary trainer who has a lot of experience fighting southpaws. He sees how many southpaws have fought Canelo. So he has a lot of experience and that is why he is going to help me.”
After that fight, the door is open for him to face Surinamese boxer Tyrone Spong in Mexico City, in the mythical Plaza de Toros. That lawsuit will be handled by Triller Fight Club. His professional record is 34 wins (22 KOs) and 2 losses.
