After it was rumored that Matías Almeyda would return to Mexico to lead Chivas de Guadalajara again, Greek media reported that the Argentine strategist will take the reins of AEK Athens. The two parties would have reached a final agreement this Thursday, according to Efe.
Almeyda, who until mid-April directed the San José Earthquakes, in the MLS, will soon arrive in Greece to close formally his 2-year contract, with the possibility of extension. The salary of the Argentine and the six members of his coaching staff exceeds $1.5 million dollars annually.
El Pelado, as he is known, traveled to Athens a few weeks ago to negotiate with Dimitris Melissanidis, owner of AEK. At the moment, the club occupies the fifth place in the classification of the Super League of Greece 51 points. Olympiacos leads the competition with 70 units.
