Former tennis player Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a crime of concealment of assets. The court of Southwark (London), which determined his guilt at the beginning of this month of April, issued the conviction this Friday, ordering the immediate admission of the former athlete to prison.
Becker will have to serve at least half of his sentence before his case is reviewed and the possibility of parole is considered, as explained by Judge Deborah Taylor in her last ruling. The magistrate pointed out in her brief that the three-time Wimbledon champion has not shown an iota of “humility” despite the seriousness of the crime committed.
It must be remembered that the The German star declared himself insolvent and thus avoided having to pay the total amount he owed his ex-wife, Barbara, for child support and after his costly divorce, which resulted in losses for the former tennis player valued at more than $47 millions of dollars. In 2017, Becker himself expressed himself about the embarrassment he felt after having filed his bankruptcy petition as a result of the non-payment of a loan of almost $4 million dollars, related to his luxurious owned by Mallorca, in Spain.
However, while his apparent economic ruin generated countless headlines in the press around the world, Boris Becker did not reduce his ostentatious lifestyle too much, which alerted the German and British authorities.
Eventually it became known that the winner of six Grand Slams had received more than $120,000 dollars with the sale of an exclusive Mercedes; although that and other large amounts were transferred to bank accounts that were not directly associated with him. Finally, the British prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley sounded the alarm about the way in which Becker illegally concealed the true figures of his assets.
