the-reason-why-a-chinese-tea-costs-more-than-$184,000-per-kilo

Not only bottles of aged whiskey can have exorbitant costs and exceed one hundred thousand dollars, there are also high-priced teas, such as Niu Lan Keng Rougui tea, whose kilo of leaves is worth $184,. It is one of the most expensive Chinese teas on the market.

Niu Lan Keng Rougui is a rare variety of Rougui, Wuyi rock tea. An oolong tea that grows on the rocks of the Wuyishan mountains of eastern China where the most famous Rougui plants are cultivated.

CNN Travel found that in a fine dining restaurant in Hong Kong called Glassbelly Tea Lab enjoy an infusion of the tea costs 20,000 HKD, the equivalent of 3,577 Dollars. The kettle has between 81 and 200 ml of tea that require about five grams of tea leaves.

Glassbelly Tea also offers Niu Lan Keng Rougui leaves for sale in its online store, 25 grams per 36,04 HKD, around 4,500 dollars .

Why is Niu Lan Keng Rougui tea so expensive

According to the Nan Nuo Shan site , the smell of the dried leaves reveals a fairly roasted oolong, however the roasted flavor is not dominant, it is described as an extremely balanced rock tea with a base rich in minerals, with sweet fruity hints, stimulating the palate. “Richer and deeper than most Rock Teas available in the Chinese market”, according to tea experts.

Niu Lan Keng Rougui tea is a rare and difficult tea to obtain. So-called rock teas develop a distinctive flavor because of the rocks from which the trees sprout, and those rocks cover a very small area.

CNN’s Maggie Hiufu Wong describes that when tasting the tea, “the first sip numbs the tongue. Then the flavors of citrus and wood that we tasted before come in slowly but in a much more condensed and smooth way”.

“It should be clear, fragrant, “gan”, harmonious and lively; it changes on your tongue,” says Wing Yeung, the founder of Glassbelly.

Gan is a Chinese word that describes a type of sweetness and freshness that is accompanied by a hint of bitterness.

“I think this is how a good tea And this is what you’ve been looking for: the answer to why tea can cost so much,” Yeung told CNN.

For Chinese tea tasters in Nan Nuo Shan, the cost of Niu tea Lan Keng Rougui is not justified in terms of its taste, they consider that it does not stand out from other more affordable Wuyi Yan Cha.

“A major problem with Chinese tea is that there is no subjective response to what a good tea is,” explained Yeung. He added that “a lot of excellent tea is still cheaper than a bottle of fine burgundy”.

“Compared to wine or coffee, the (tea) market is less transparent, making it difficult for consumers to know how much a particular type of tea should cost and why”, publishes CNN

Niu Lan Keng Rougui is not the only high-priced Chinese tea, there are other Wuyi teas that are highly valued, such as the authentic Da Hong Pao, bred only at from the original trees.

According to Tea Senz, there are many rich Chinese tea lovers waiting to get their hands on it, so the price may skyrocket given the scarcity of supply.

It is a very limited product , although many will try to sell it and it will be difficult to find out the truth of its origin.
