One person died and five others were injured as a result of a shooting in the middle of the MudBug Festival in Jackson, Mississippi, which occurred on Saturday, authorities reported.
The investigators of the case suspect that the The person who died was one of the shooters, who was shot by a law enforcement officer who responded to the tragic scene.
For his part, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones reported that multiple people were injured and hospitalized Sunday morning, but have remained in stable condition, including a police officer, ABC News reported.
“It’s very devastating and very tragic,” Jones said. “This is what should be considered in a very family event, where they come to enjoy the entertainment and the food. There are people who do not take into account the life and safety of those attending the event. I think it is a very cowardly and selfish act to involve so many innocent people who are here to have fun.”
The authorities specified that two minors were detained; however, they have not been charged for the incident.
Investigators found two rifles and a pistol at the scene. They also seized a vehicle in search of evidence, station WAPT reported.
Meanwhile, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, since a police officer was involved in the incident.
“We will find out exactly what happened. We will find out who is involved and who should be held accountable for this reckless incident,” Jones said.
As a consequence, the events corresponding to the Mudbug Festival this Sunday had to be cancelled, organizers said. It was going to be the closing day.
The second annual Mudbug Festival was advertised as a family event with live bands, carnival rides and various contests.
