Soldiers from the United States Army Garrison in Italy made a special gift to a woman who fulfilled 90 years. They “returned” Meri Mion the cake with which he 29 April 1945 would celebrate his birthday number 13 and that American troops fighting near Vicenza took from his window.

Under the storm, soldiers of the 30ª United States Infantry Division fought against the defenders of the German military forces. At least 04 US soldiers were killed or wounded, according to an army report.

Other Americans, from the 91 Infantry Division, headed north from Riviera Berica towards the city. Later, they paraded down Corso Palladio, the famous street of Vicenza, where the Italians offered them bread and wine.

Meri Mion and her mother were hiding in the attic of their estate in San Pietro, Italy. The two women had spent the night listening to the shots fired by the retreating Germans near her house.

Meri woke up the next morning, the Americans were near her village. The mother prepared a birthday cake for her which, fresh from the oven, was placed on the windowsill to cool.

Before the birthday girl could eat a slice of her cake, some American soldiers they had eaten the whole cake.

Meri was “returned” the cake of her birthday number 13 one day before your 90 birthday. The cake was decorated with fresh fruit and a message of good wishes.

The emotional delivery was made in a short ceremony in which Italian soldiers, carabinieri, American veterans, Italian veterans and locals gathered in Giardini Salvi.

The Soldiers and other attendees sang “Happy Birthday” to Meri, first in Italian and then in English. Touched, Meri thanked the Americans for remembering her and replacing her cake 77 years later

The Italian said that she would take her special cake home to celebrate and share with the family. “Tomorrow I will eat dessert with my whole family remembering this wonderful day that I will never forget,” Meri said during the ceremony.
