Tian-Rong Lin, a woman of 62 years old, was run over when she was walking towards the church in the Bronx (NYC), apparently because the driver Ramón Cedeño Ortiz did not stop.
The lady was crossing Seward Ave. at Olmstead Ave., Castle Hill neighborhood, around 11 Saturday am when she was hit by a Ford truck 2004, police said. The Hispanic driver remained at the scene and was charged with Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian and Failure to Exercise Due Care.
Cedeño lives a mile from the scene of the accident, in the same area as Lin’s home, according to the NYPD. “There are four stop signs,” grieving widower Ben Ying told Daily News about the intersection. “Police told me the guy didn’t stop. This is definitely unacceptable… It’s common sense. Everybody knows. (You have to) Stop.”
Lin was on her way to pick up produce at a local church food bank where she volunteered, according to her husband. The victim had had trouble walking after she broke her foot last year, said Ying, aged 72. “She walked slowly but could still carry 50 pounds…She was such a healthy and strong woman.”
When Lin crossed Seward Avenue, driver Cedeno crashed into her while making a left turn, according to police. Doctors took her to Jacobi Medical Center, but could not save her after surgery.
The immigrant couple met in the Chinese province of Fujian more than 40 years. They had a son together who, according to Ying, had a very close relationship with his now deceased mother, who was also an enthusiastic gardener.
At the end of April there was a tragic streak in NYC at a average of one person killed by a collision every day. At that time, 74 people had been killed in the city in 2022, including a 21-year-old medical student hit by a Hispanic driver drunk, in Lower Manhattan.
In addition to the gun violence , traffic accidents are another great challenge for the new mayor Eric Adams, after a disastrous legacy of his predecessor, Bill De Blasio. New York City has seen a 35% increase in traffic accidents so far this year , indicated NYPD in mid-April.
