“This is not going to stay like this”, said Saúl Canelo Álvarez about the man tied up at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas after losing against Dmitry Bivol. A few weeks passed and that rematch already has a date: May 2023.
Eddie Hearn who is the president of Matchroom, the company that promoted the first fight between Canelo and Bivol, confirmed the roadmap for both boxers in an interview for The DAZN Boxing Show.
“We sat down with Dmitry Bivol and his team and said: ‘Look, you are going to defend your world championship almost at the same time, in September, and then you are going to have a rematch with Canelo Álvarez in May”, declared the promoter.
That is, Bivol will have to fight in September against another boxer from the 175 pounds to defend his World Boxing Association belt. The name of that challenger is not yet known, but it could be Joshua Buatsi who beat Craig Richards in London last time 21 of May. This Briton has 16 trumps (10 KO’s) and has not lost.
Callum Smith is another of the possible rivals: “That is a fight that also we would be interested in doing You have Callum Smith there, another of our boxers that we represent”, said Hearn.
While that is happening, Canelo Álvarez is going to complete his trilogy against the Kazakh Gennady Golovkin, revenge that the Mexican described as personal, but four years later he gave it to a European boxer who is already 40 years old, nine more than Guadalajara.
Canelo gives value to his fight against Bivol
Losing to Dmitry Bivol meant that Canelo lost first place in all the rankings of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. However, he thinks he is still the best.
“Tell me another fighter who goes up and down in weight, wanting to achieve different things. I risk everything to keep making history when I don’t need to. So personally, I still feel like I’m the best in the world,” he stated on DAZN Boxing.
