Spectacular, this was the knockout that Gervonta Davis knocked out Rolando “Rolly” Romero at the Barclays Center in New York, to retain the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship and remain undefeated.
When the fight was getting complicated, Davis took advantage of Romero’s carelessness and hit him with a left foot to the face during the sixth assault. The boxer of Cuban descent fell forward, bounced off the ropes and went to the canvas.
Despite the fact that he tried to get up, Rolly continued to stagger; so judge David Field opted to end the fight. “Here I am, and I have for everyone,” said Tank Davis when asked about a possible fight against Ryan Garcia.
It is worth noting that Gervonta (27-0, with KO), had not gotten a knockout in his previous triumph, something that had only happened to him once before in his career.
According to CompuBox, the American was superior in the final statistics of the fair, when connecting 27 total hits by the 22 of Romero. Curiously, the only round in which Rolly had landed more punches was in the sixth, which was the end of the fight.
