catholic-church-questions-decisions-of-the-supreme-court-of-mexico-on-abortion

The Mexican Catholic Church described the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) as “myopic” this Sunday for the decisions on abortion and the right to life from conception, approved this week.

On May 24 the Supreme Court of Mexico approved that girls and adolescents can voluntarily access the interruption of pregnancy without the need for the endorsement of their parents or guardians , and two days later invalidated the provision in the Nuevo León Constitution that protected the right to life from conception and limited the right of women and pregnant people to reproductive autonomy.

“They say that justice is blind, but in this case it seems rather short-sighted”, said the Archdiocese of Mexico in its editorial of the weekly “Desde la fe” on this day.

“Well, with an unfocused gaze -which fails to see all the problems involved in giving erroneous messages to a population that suffers from the violence ia-, the Court believes that guaranteeing an abortion to a victim is the maximum that is expected to have a dignified life free of violence”, he added.

Of the first decision, the Catholic body said that in addition to being a clear violation of parental authority, “it promotes impunity and re-victimizes women who have been violated, since it facilitates abortion without the need for the person requesting it to file any complaint against their sexual aggressor; that is, the same aggressor could even be the one who takes the woman to have an abortion”.

She recalled that, for various medical interventions, the General Health Law states that “minor persons cannot be alone”, something that, he said, most of the judges decided to ignore.

While on the second said that this decision “implies a new setback in terms of human rights.”

“Most of the SCJN ministers consider that protecting the right to life from conception limits other supposed rights, but, what right can exist that implies the death of a human being?” questioned the Archdiocese.

In addition, it said that in order to continue “imposing abortion as a social solution, the ministers decide to withdraw the protection of human life from our maximum laws”.
