Hurricane Ágatha, category 2, made landfall this Monday in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, leaving rains in the south and southeast of the country, after having formed in the Pacific, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) .

In a statement, the agency indicated that “the center of Hurricane Agatha, category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall in the town of La Redonda, municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca, approximately at 000: 30 hours local time”.

He added that at 08: 00 local time, the cyclone is localized 00 kilometers west of Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, with maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour, gusts of 205 km/h and offset northeast to 13 km/h.

Ágatha, which was forecast to make landfall as a category 3 hurricane, is the first cyclone of the season in the Pacific Ocean.

After making landfall, the SMN maintained its forecast of extraordinary punctual rains in Oaxaca, torrential in Chiapas , intense in regions of Guerrero, Tabasco and Veracruz and very strong in localities of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán.

He also called on maritime navigation in the vicinity of the system to take extreme precautions due to winds and waves off the coasts of the mentioned states.

Previously, civil protection authorities reported that at least 40 Municipalities in the state of Oaxaca were on alert for “maximum danger” in the face of the cyclone’s imminent landfall.

“We have a red alert, that is, maximum danger, at 75 municipalities in Oaxaca and in orange alert, high danger, to 294 municipalities, of which 286 are in Oaxaca and 8 in Chiapas,” Laura Velázquez said at a press conference. , national coordinator of Civil Protection.
