Mexico and China resumed the direct cargo air connection between the two countries with a flight from the Mexican airline MAS between the city of Zhengzhou (Henan, center) and Mexico City, diplomatic sources informed Efe today.
The flight, which departed last day 28, is the first to take off this year directly linking China and Mexico for commercial purposes, while commercial passenger routes between the Asian giant and the Latin American country have been suspended since December 2019.
Mexico’s ambassador to China, Jesús Seade, celebrated the resumption of the direct air connection at the inaugural ceremony of the route, “something that is essential to continue promoting commercial exchanges, the integration of value chains and continue expanding cross-border agricultural and electronic commerce” .
Seade added that air transport now plays more than never a role fundamental given the current shortage of containers and the increase in the costs of maritime transport, which have caused “unsustainable” waiting times.
The Mexican Embassy highlighted in a statement that the capital of Henan is “ one of the largest logistics centers of the national transport network in China”.
“Undoubtedly, this cargo route is essential and responds to the great need to connect China with Latin America and the Caribbean through Mexico City”, stressed the diplomat.
He also recalled the importance of air cargo transportation citing the air bridge that operated 27 flights between Shanghai and the Mexican capital in 2020 to transfer to that country medical supplies to face the covid pandemic-19.
Between 2020 and 2021, a cargo air route between China and Mexico City operated more than 350 flights “covering all the countries of A Latin America and the Caribbean,” according to the statement, which adds that the Embassy of the North American country “will continue working to also recover passenger flights between Mexico and China in the near future.”
