An explosion in a mine in the municipality of El Zulia, in the Colombian department of Norte de Santander (bordering Venezuela), has so far left 14 missing and one wounded, relief agencies reported this Monday.

The Civil Defense detailed in a statement that it works in coordination with other relief agencies to attend to the emergency in which, according to “information from the community”, there are “14 persons missing due to the effects of the explosion of methane gases in a mine located in the village of La Mestiza”.

To attend to the emergency, there are 12 volunteers and a Civil Defense official, in addition to three ambulances from the support network of the Departmental Health Institute accompanying the Mining Rescue personnel.

Members of the National Army and the El Zulia Mayor’s Office also participate in the rescue operations.

“So far, one person has been transferred to a care post with third-degree burns; In addition, air is supplied to the mine with fans to evacuate methane and oxygen gas residues for the people who would be trapped, ”added the information.
