The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on its website that it has made a significant improvement to the online tool “Where’s My Refund?”, which now features a new feature that allows taxpayers check the status of your current tax year and refunds from two prior years.
“The IRS is committed to identifying opportunities for real-time improvement for taxpayers and the professional tax community,” Rettig said. “This improvement to Where’s My Refund? it is just one of many”.
According to the information, users can select any of the three most recent tax years to check the status of their refund, they will only need their Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and expected refund amount from the tax return originally filed for the tax year being reviewed.
The IRS notes that using the “Where’s My Refund?” resource, taxpayers can start checking the status of their refund within:
– 24 hours after electronic filing of a tax year return 2021 .
– Three or four days after electronic filing of a tax year return 2019 or 2020.
– Four weeks after mailing a return .
The IRS reminds taxpayers that the Online Account remains the best option for finding your adjusted gross income, balance due, or other account information from the prior year.
“We encourage those who are expecting a refund, but have requested an extension, to apply as soon as you are ready. We process returns on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner the better,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “There really is no reason to wait until October 17 if taxpayers have the relevant information to file now. Free File is still available for extension recipients to use to prepare and file their federal tax return for free.”
The IRS reminds that electronic filing is open on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and continues to receive returns and issue refunds. Once taxpayers have filed their return, they can track their refund with “Where’s My Refund?”
“Where’s My Refund?” is a useful tool that allows taxpayers to track their refund through three stages:
– Refund Received.
– Refund sent.
The tool is updated once a day, usually overnight, and provides taxpayers with a projected refund issue date as soon as it is approved.
