MEXICO CITY – Tropical storm Ágatha was downgraded to a tropical depression on Tuesday as it lost power as it passed through southern Mexico after making landfall in the southern state of Oaxaca on Monday, although it will maintain heavy rains in several states, reported the National Water Commission (Conagua).

“Ágatha has weakened to a tropical depression. It is located on land, in the vicinity of Aguatenango, Oaxaca and 90 kilometers north of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca”, Conagua said in a brief information card.

The agency stated that Ágatha currently has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 75 km/h and offset northeast at 13 km/h.

However, he pointed out that the tropical phenomenon will continue to cause torrential rains in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco; in addition to intense punctual rains in Campeche, very strong in Quintana Roo and strong punctual rains in Yucatán.

Ágatha, which made landfall this Monday in Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca as a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir- Simpson, out of a total of 5, has reduced its power to depression with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers and will maintain wind gusts of 50 at 60 km/h on the coasts of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

The Conagua warned that the rains could generate an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, landslides and floods in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states, so vigilance will be maintained for torrential rains in said entities.

Ágatha, which was forecast to make landfall as a category 3 hurricane, is the first cyclone of the season in the Pacific Ocean.
