Ten dead and disappeared left Ágatha after making landfall as a category two hurricane on Monday in the Mexican state of Oaxaca (south), although this Tuesday it was downgraded to a tropical depression, informed the local government.
“Right now we bring around 20 disappeared persons, most of them are in the upper part of the mountain, that is to say in the mountains,” Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat told Radio Formula. .
Murat said that the figure is due to the overflow of rivers and landslides from hills.
Previously, the government had reported three dead and eight missing, but as the effects of Agatha dissipate the toll has increased.
“When Agatha made landfall, the day ended without loss of human life, but the intense rains that were recorded during the early hours of Tuesday caused rivers to break their banks and landslides,” Murat said earlier.
Agatha is the first storm of the season
The phenomenon made landfall as a hurricane 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale (of 5) on Monday afternoon west of Puerto Ángel, a coastal community in Oaxaca, of about 2,500 population.
Agatha moves this Tuesday over the south of Veracruz (east), which has a coast on the Gulf of Mexico, causing torrential rains in that region and the south of the country.
“The greatest impact we have is basically on the roads, but by midday communications should be restored”, added Murat.
