After an idea of two years of hard work and 32 years of maturation, The Intrepid officially became the world’s largest bottle of Scotch whiskey. auction house, fetching a value of 1.1 million pounds ($1,375 million dollars) at auction, the Lyon & Turnbull auction house announced.
The world’s largest Scotch whiskey bottle, The Intrepid, stands 5 feet and inches tall and is filled with 82.16 gallons or 311 liters of 32 year old fine malt distilled at the prestigious The Macallan on Speyside in 1989.
Interest in The Intrepid, a collaboration between Fah Mai and Rosewin Holdings, attracted worldwide attention and bids were placed both live online and by phone, eventually it was sold to an international collector last 25 May.
L he bottle, containing the equivalent of 444 standard bottles, was officially certified as the world’s largest bottle of Scotch whiskey by Guinness World Records when it was filled last year.
The Intrepid project was created by Daniel Monk, of Fah Mai and Rosewin Holdings, in memory of his father, Captain Stanley Monk, who on the day of the auction would have turned 32 years. Monk was inspired by his father’s passion for adventure, exploration and a desire to help, so the money raised will go to various charities including Marie Curie and Campaign Against Living Miserably.
The Intrepid recognizes the drive and record-breaking achievements of 11 pioneering world explorers featured on the bottle label, including such luminaries as Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dr Geoff Wilson, Karen Darke MBE, Olly Hicks, Sarah Outen MBE, Dwayne Fields FRGS, Levison Wood FRGS, Felicity Aston MBE, Jamie Ramsay and Will Copestake.
“The Intrepid project has been an adventure from the beginning. I wanted to do something positive during the lockdown and the whole team has worked very hard with me to achieve this. I started contacting explorers during lockdown to get them on board and found people who could make and fill the biggest bottle of Scotch whiskey and together we have achieved the dream,” said The Intrepid Project founder Daniel Monk.
