Pete Arredondo, the police chief of the Uvalde school, was sworn in as a new member of the city council on Tuesday, despite not responding to a follow-up interview request from the Texas Rangers investigating the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 21 people dead.
On Tuesday night, the mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, said, “The members of the Uvalde City Council were sworn in today according to the City Charter. Out of respect for the families who buried their children today and who plan to bury their children in the coming days, no ceremony was held.”
“Our parents deserve answers and I trust that the Department Texas Public Safety/Texas Rangers will leave no stone unturned.”
In 2020, Arredondo became chief of police for the Uvalde school district and was elected to the city council earlier this month.
Last week, during the shooting unleashed by Salvador Ramos at the local elementary school, he took on the role of incident commander.
The director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Steven McCraw, said on Friday that the young man from years he remained inside the school for more than an hour while 19 officers waited in a corridor, because Arredondo thought “there were no more threat to the children and that the subject was entrenched and that they had time to organize.”
Initially, Arredondo attended the first couple of press conferences and initially worked with the Texas Rangers on their investigation, but in recent days he no longer responded to their requests for a follow-up interview.
“The Uvalde Police Department and the Uvalde CISD Police have been cooperating with investigators,” the statement said. “The Uvalde CISD Police Chief provided an initial interview, but has not responded to a request for a follow-up interview with the Texas Rangers that was made two days ago.”2022
