One day after the jury of the trial that pitted Johnny Depp against Amber Heard ruled in favor of the actor, the actress’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, gave an interview to the ‘Today’ program, where she stated that Amber wants appeal the verdict.
“She has excellent reasons for it. She was demonized here. A number of things were allowed in this courtroom that shouldn’t have been allowed, and they caused confusion for the jury. We weren’t allowed to tell them about the UK trial,” she argued.
As if that weren’t enough, she also revealed that Amber doesn’t have the means to pay damages to her ex-husband.
And the jury found that Heard defamed Depp on all three counts and awarded $16 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages, but no punitive damages.
“No, absolutely not,” Bredehoft replied to host Savannah Guthrie when asked if Heard could pay the fine.
“We had a huge amount of evidence that was suppressed in this case,” he added.
The actress was supposed to join her attorney on the morning show, but pulled out of interviews after her loss in court, People reported.
Though it’s likely both actors have a good financial situation due to their roles in big movies, it is unclear how financially fit Amber may be to pay damages.
She previously received a $7 million settlement from Depp after his divorce from 2016, who pledged to donate to charities, including the American Civil Liberties Union, although during the trial, he said he had not yet fulfilled the p romesa due to the demand of the actor.
That may raise questions about whether Heard’s pockets are deep enough to cover the damages, which included $10 million in damages. compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages, although the latter was reduced to the Virginia limit of $675,000 in such compensation.
