On Broadway: Paradise Square

“Paradise Square” kicks off with an upbeat, upbeat song that takes place in New York City’s notorious Five Points neighborhood in the living room which is owned by Nelly O’Brien (Joaquina Kalukango). It is 1863, and her Irish immigrant husband, Willy O’Brien (Matt Bogart) and his best friend, ‘Lucky’ Mike Quinlan (Kevin Dennis), have volunteered to serve the Union Army in the Civil War still going on. The residents of the Paradise Square Saloon bid the soldiers farewell with cheers led by Willy’s sister, Annie Lewis (Chilina Kennedy), and prayers led by her husband, Reverend Samuel Jacob Lewis (Nathaniel Stampley). That’s the beginning of the new Broadway production that won over musical lovers and critics alike, after receiving 10 nominations for the next installment of the Tony, including Kalukango (center of the photo) as best actress, who receives a well-deserved standing ovation in each performance after performing the song “Let it Burn”. An unmissable work for lovers of musicals. It is presented at the Ethel Barrymore Theater (202 West 47th Street). Information and tickets: Telecharge.com
