We all know that May is the month dedicated to mothers, where both in Mexico and in the United States, we honor her figure within the family nucleus and for her daily work of love, dedication and sacrifice for the well-being of her children. .
But just as mothers have a day to celebrate them, fathers also have their special day, which is celebrated this June.
The celebration of Father’s Day began in the United States to recognize the work and role of fathers in the home.
This proposal to recognize parents was made by Sonora Smart, daughter of Henry Jackson Smart, a veteran of the American Civil War, who took care of his 6 children , after his wife died giving birth to the last of them. Initially, Smart proposed June 5, his father’s birthday, as the date to celebrate Father’s Day.
It was in 1924 that the proposal was supported by then US President Calvin Coolidge. However, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day official every third Sunday in June and this tradition was resumed in Mexico and other nations.
In Mexico, parents are celebrated on the third Sunday of June, every year, from 1960.
There is no good reason why Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June and not on the first or the second. What is believed is that Sunday was chosen because it is the most familiar day of the week. In addition to coming from a context where in past times the man was the only provider of the home and in charge of working, Sunday was the official day of rest for the majority in those times. In this way, it would be easier for them to enjoy their celebration.
When will Father’s Day be celebrated in the United States and Mexico in this 2022?
This year, in both countries, it will be celebrated on Sunday 19 of June.
