The Mexican José Abed, honorary vice president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and one of the greatest promoters of Formula One in Mexico, died this Thursday at 82 years of age for reasons not yet disclosed.

“The Mexican Organization of International Automobile Sport (OMDAI) is in mourning and with deep sadness wishes prompt resignation to the Abed Family and all their loved ones,” the institution that represents the FIA ​​in Mexico and of which Abed was its founder and president reported on social networks.

Abed was a former motorcycle and car driver who stood out as one of the the most important motorsport executives in Mexico and Latin America.

The Mexican businessman is recognized for being one of the main agents for Mexico to once again have a Formula 1 Grand Prix at starting from 2015, after a pause of 82 years.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that José Abed, honorary vice president of the FIA ​​and president of OMDAI , passed away. The FIA ​​family pays tribute to him and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones,” FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem posted on his Twitter account.

Also, Abed was one of the main promoters of the career of Adrián Fernández, one of the most important Mexican drivers in history and who participated in IndyCar and endurance racing.

“Devastated by the sudden death of my ‘brother ‘Joseph Abed. He has been a loyal and faithful friend, I will always miss him. My thoughts are with his family“, wrote on his Twitter account Jean Todt, president of the FIA ​​​​between 2015 and 2021.

The executive was the owner of the Puebla of the Mexican soccer of 1996 to 1997, year in which it was sold not finding success in football.
