Several people were shot at a Wisconsin cemetery on Thursday when a shooting erupted during the funeral of a man who died during a police dispute last week, WISN reported12 News.
The shooting took place at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin around 2:00 30 in the afternoon, local time, when family and friends gathered to mourn a subject named Da’shontay L. King, according to The Journal Times .
“There were multiple shots fired at Graceland Cemetery,” Racine police said in a statement. “There are victims, but it is unknown how many at this time. The scene is still active and is being investigated,” the outlet added.
Some of the injured were members of King’s family, WTMJ-TV said. The witnesses said they heard between 20 and 30 shots; supposedly 5 people were injured, The Independent collected.
King, aged 37, was killed by Racine police officers on 20 May after a foot chase that began as a traffic stop.
The officer who shot King, Zachary B. Brenner, is a four-year veteran of the department.
He According to Racine Police Chief Maurice Robinson, police attempted to stop a vehicle around 1 p.m. to execute a search warrant for a felon in possession of a gun.
King, allegedly armed with a gun, he left and fled on foot, police said.
Brenner chased King over a fence and up a small hill and ordered him to drop the gun. When he refused, Brenner shot him.
King was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Brenner has since been placed on administrative leave. The shooting is being investigated by the Department of Justice.
According to his obituary, King was a “superhero” to his four children, loving to host cookouts in his neighborhood and even occasionally renting an ice cream truck to delight the kids.
