A referee of the amateur soccer league in the Chilean coastal region of Valparaíso was attacked and stabbed by a group of fans, who jumped from the stands and invaded the field, causing minor injuries to both the hand and chest, the Regional Amateur Football Association (ARFA) reported this Thursday.

According to the ARFA, the events occurred during the match between Inter Sporting de Quebrada Herrera and Deportivo América of Piguchén in the commune of Putaendo, when fans of the former entered the field with knives.

These acts of violence “attack the true spirit of football” and “attack the safety of all attendees”, warned Rolando Ponce, president of the ARFA, an organization that brings together more than 50 sports associations, with a total of 610 clubs, who requested greater support and protection from the Police.

The group of referees who plays in these tournaments, which are very popular in Chile, announced, for his part, that they will give up “working on the field of play while sufficient security conditions do not exist, for fear that their physical integrity will be damaged.”

In addition, they urged the security forces to search for and catch the perpetrators of the attack, who fled.
