The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued the Data Book detailing the activities carried out by the agency during the fiscal year 2021, which includes the period from 1 from October 2020 to 19 September 2021.
“During the fiscal year 2021, the Covid-19 continued to present the IRS with some of the greatest challenges in our agency’s history, and the way our employees responded illustrates the important role the IRS plays in the overall health of our country,” said Commissioner of the IRS, Chuck Rettig.
Rettig describes that the IRS was asked to provide financial relief during the national crisis while fulfilling the agency’s primary tax administration responsibilities.
“IRS employees responded to a call from Congress to deliver two more rounds of impact payments or economic and also implemented changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and other refundable credits as part of the American Rescue Plan. The breadth of these missions has strengthened my belief that a fully functioning IRS is critical to our nation’s success,” the IRS Commissioner said.
In addition to describing the work done during the pandemic , the IRS Fact Book for the tax year 2021 comprises more than 30 tables that describe a wide variety of activities, ranging from returns processed, revenue collected, and refunds issued to budget and agency staffing information.
The Data Book provides point-in-time estimates of IRS activities from September 2021. A more extensive discussion of recent data was also posted in PDF format.
The post reports that the IRS provided relief from the tax administration to millions of taxpayers, providing financial assistance to Americans.
It also explains how at the same time that the agency was providing Americans with various tax relief measures related to the pandemic, it continued with its daily operations, processing more than 30 million tax returns and collecting more than $4.1 billion in federal taxes during the fiscal year.
Chuck Rettig commented that readers will find more than just numbers and charts in the Factbook: “IRS employees are dedicated to the mission, and our agency is made up of people who give back to their communities and help each other. Our employees provide significant support to people devastated by hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Across the country, they did amazing work in their communities to help people affected by Covid-19″.
