This Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced that total non-farm payroll employment increased by 390,000 in May, and that the unemployment rate remained at 3.6%.
The BLS highlights that the sectors in which there were notable increases in employment were in leisure and hospitality, in the professional sector and business services, and in transport and storage , while in retail, employment fell.
Regarding the May unemployment rate, it was 3.6% for the third consecutive month, and the number of unemployed remained essentially unchanged at 6 million. The data is a little different from its values in February of 2020, before the Covid-pandemic 19, when 3.5% and 5.7 million were registered.

Employment in construction increased by 36,000 in May, unchanged in April. In May, there were job gains in specialty trade contractors (+17, ) and heavy construction and civil engineering ( +11,000).
Employment in retail trade decreased in 61,000 in May, but it is 159,000 above its level recorded in February 2020. In the month there were job losses in general
merchandise stores (-33,000), stores clothing and clothing accessories (-9.), food and beverage stores (-8,000), building material and garden supply stores (-7,000), and health and personal care stores (-5,000).
Median hourly earnings for all employees on private non-farm payrolls increased by 10 cents, or 0.3%, to $31.95 in May. In the last 12 months, the average hourly earnings have increased by 5.2%.
In May, the average workweek for all employees on private non-farm payrolls was 33. 6 hours for the third consecutive month.
