After 16 Years of theatrical productions in New York City and Puerto Rico, Boundless Theater Company returns with the premiere of the award-winning play “Mercado Libre”.

The play, which starts this weekend until 12 in June, explores the challenges of human dignity under the capitalist system, a vital issue for our current sociopolitical environment. Written in Spanish by playwright Luis Araújo, who comes to make its US premiere after receiving acclaim in European countries, and directed by Ismanuel Rodríguez, “Mercado Libre” tells the story of the complicated and often dark relationship between an influential lawyer and an undocumented prostitute; an intense tour de force performed by experienced actors Gerardo Gudiño and Diana Pou.

The work offers an almost clinical exploration of how capitalism informs our lives to the point that we distort the concepts of what is and is not valuable, and therefore we live blind to social injustice . In this distorted but normalized existence, everything has a price, including life.

Maintaining the tradition of cultural exchange between Puerto Rico and New York City, Boundless Theater features the participation of renowned Puerto Rican director Ismanuel Rodríguez (“Las extraordinary things”), which has a long career with successes in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Spain and several cities in the United States. Along with Ismanuel, Latino designers with experience on Broadway, off-Broadway and the Latin theater of the Big Apple collaborate.

For its part, Boundless Theater is in charge of several programs that support the diversity of the theater industry in the US, these include Boundless Exposed, a mentoring program for young Latino and other minority designers; and El Barrio Raíces, a free summer program that offers a bilingual theater curriculum for all children in New York City.

“This year we came back stronger than ever and face-to-face manner. We also just produced our second short film “Cupido Brings Correspondence” as part of the Boundless de Oro senior program, and we continue to bring exciting material to the stage that represents and connects our communities while giving a voice to those who don’t have one. Our company is run by female theater designers and we excel at creating visually mesmerizing work that takes the audience on a sensory journey,” explains Boundless Theater Executive Artistic Director María-Cristina Fusté.

The piece is presented from 3 to 12 of June, at the Julia de Burgos Performance and Arts Center, located at 1680 Lexington Avenue between the streets 105 Y 106. Tickets are on sale at: www.boundlesstheatre.org.
