The Leon County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday that a fugitive killer believed to be linked to the deaths of five people in Centerville, Texas, was caught and killed in a shootout with police.

Gonzalo López was a convicted murderer who escaped from prison last month, sparking a three-week manhunt.

Authorities said the killings occurred in the area where which the subject had fled.

The corpses of a An adult and four minors were found on Thursday by the police while they were carrying out a welfare check at the house requested by a relative.

In addition to the bodies found, a white Chevrolet Silverado of 1999, which López may have stolen before the shooting.

The man, who was linked to the Mexican mafia, fled from a bus for inmates from high risk in a rural area near Centerville in the past 12 May, after freeing himself from his bonds.

To escape Lopez went through a metal cage and stabbed a corrections officer who was driving, temporarily hijacking the bus before a second guard shot out the tires and the vehicle crashed. The criminal had last been seen running into the woods on Highway 7.

After fleeing, he became one of the 000 Texas Most Wanted Fugitives. The persecution of him is considered one of the greatest in decades.

The subject had an extensive criminal record, since in 1996 he was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and received two eight-year sentences. Ten years later he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison.

The killer received a second life sentence after being convicted of attempted capital murder in 2007.
