negotiator-tried-to-contact-the-uvalde-gunman-while-he-was-committing-the-massacre

More than a week after the massacre inside Robb Elementary School that left 21 people dead, 19 children and 2 teachers, the mayor of Uvalde, Texas, Don McLaughlin, has disclosed that a negotiator tried to contact the gunman while opening fire indiscriminately.

In an interview with The Washington Post, McLaughlin indicated that a potential negotiator tried “frantically” to contact Salvador Ramos via mobile phone from a funeral home across the street from the school.

Furthermore, he explained that as soon as he found out about the shooting he quickly went to the Hillcrest Funeral Home and there he met an official who identified himself as “the negotiator”.

“His main goal was to try to get this person on the phone,” he revealed. And he added: “They tried with all the numbers they could find”.

Despite the efforts of “the negotiator”, Salvador Ramos never answered the phone call.

The mayor also pointed out in the same interview that it was very likely that “the negotiator” was not aware, at that time, that several children had been called to 911 to ask the police for help and beg to be rescued.

In addition, he added that he was also unaware that the children were asking for help from their cell phones and that during the time he remained in the funeral home he did not hear shots inside the school.

On if he contacted Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo, who has been heavily criticized for his “poor management of the response to the shooting,” he said no.

The case has not been closed and the investigators managed to get a judge to accept that Salvador Ramos’ cell phone be investigated in order to understand what motivated him to provoke a massacre.
