WASHINGTON – Colombian President Iván Duque announced this Friday the capture of “all those allegedly involved” in the death of Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci, who was assassinated last May during a trip to Colombia.

“In a joint operation of the Colombian National Police, the Colombian Attorney General’s Office and with the collaboration of the Paraguayan authorities, we have captured all those allegedly involved, including the perpetrator of the murder of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci “, reported the president from Washington.

Duque, who is on tour in the United States, said that the suspects were arrested thanks to an “intelligence operation” and “meticulous work”, and anticipated that they will be made available to a guarantee control judge.

Duque did not reveal more details about the number and identity of the detainees, but promised that all the data “will be given to public opinion” once they have gone through the judge’s review.

The Colombian president affirmed that the authorities have “important and robust evidence” to accuse them, and asserted that all those who participated in this “horrendous crime” they will get “what they deserve”.

In addition, he expressed his “solidarity” with Pecci’s family and with the Paraguayan people.

Duque made this announcement from Andrews Air Force Base, outside Washington, where he planned to fly today to the city of Reno, Nevada, to participate in a conference of US mayors .

Pecci, a well-known anti-mafia prosecutor in Paraguay, was shot dead by unknown assailants on 10 May on a beach in Barú, near Cartagena de Indias, where he traveled for his honeymoon with his wife, the Paraguayan journalist Claudia Aguilera.
