The Argentine Gerardo “Tata” Martino, coach of Mexico, admitted that his team makes mistakes that high-ranking rivals, such as Uruguay, do not forgive.
“ We compete well with the powers until we make mistakes that they don’t make. When the game is no longer on our side, we have no ability to react,” he explained after Mexico’s 0-3 loss to Uruguay in a friendly match at State Farm Stadium in Glendale (Arizona, USA).
The loss against Uruguay was the second for Mexico against opponents above their level, the first was a 4-0 win by Argentina in 2019.
“There is a lack of attention on the stopped ball, but with some rivals, deficiencies are not so noticeable . We must keep trying”, added the former FC Barcelona coach.
Tata Martino assured that, in the first half, Mexico was not overtaken by Uruguay. However, defensive inattentions caused Matías Vecino to score and Edinson Cavani to double.
“I think the first half was very even, they didn’t make a difference. That was scored in Cavani’s initial goals in the second half, the spaces opened up”, he said.
The native of Rosario asked not to be alarmist since the result against Uruguay was in a preparation match for the Qatar World Cup 2022 and not in an official one.
“I do not lose sight of the fact that it is a friendly match, that there is an objective achieved that led Mexico to play a new World Cup. This is part of the preparation, there are difficult moments and more pleasant ones, but the reality is that we are not willing to not fight to get to play a World Cup, “he said.
After qualifying Qatar by finishing in second place in the Concacaf qualifiers, Mexico adds a scoreless draw in its preparation matches against Guatemala, a win over Nigeria and a loss to Uruguay. The next test for the Mexicans will be this Sunday, when they meet Ecuador in Chicago.
