The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, affirmed today that the Salvadoran authorities’ campaign against gang violence, in which more than 38,000 people, “increases the risk of arbitrary arrests and torture of detainees”.
“Special cause for concern” is the death of at least 21 people in custody in the course of these operations, said Bachelet at the opening of the fiftieth session of the UN Human Rights Council, in which dealt with the situation of fundamental freedoms in several countries.
The campaign in El Salvador “has increased concern about respect for due process guarantees,” insisted the former Chilean president.
Bachelet affirmed that she recognizes “the right of a State to confront the increase in crime and to guarantee security”, but pointed out that be exercised “ensuring that the measures are implemented in accordance with international human rights law.”
