ifab-approved-the-rule-of-the-five-changes-in-football-and-it-will-remain-permanently

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), agreed this Monday, together with the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, to approve the five changes per team in high-level professional football matches.

The imposition of the five changes was approved after the impact of the Covid- pandemic in 2020, in order to protect footballers from severe wear and tear.

The measure will be adopted from the season 2022-

, and will come into force exactly as of of July 1 of this year.

The decision was made within the framework of the 136 Annual General Assembly held in Doha, Qatar, in which other factors were also analyzed, such as the outside of place and the implementation of new technologies for referees.

The assembly also addressed situations such as cases of concussion and essays on changes that are applied in these situations.

In total there are 140 competitions involved in these trials, and they will be extended until August of next year in order to collect enough data to make a scientifically valid decision.

Agreed that the testing will continue to focus on the permanent retirement of any player who suffers a concussion, and considered that further education is needed to ensure that the protocols are executed correctly.

They also highlight the possibility of placing body cameras on the referees.

“Our obligation is to protect the game, make it better and protect the referees from aggression. We are going to look for initiatives through education because we never want players, officials and parents to insult our referees”, Gianni Infantino said at a press conference after the meeting.
