The definition by penalties between Peru and Australia in which the Oceanic team triumphed 5-4 had only one hero and it was one that was not originally summoned to the great definition: Andrew Redmayne.
The Australian goalkeeper entered from the bench for Mathew Ryan and captured all the eyes of the world for his dances under the goal, fundamental at the time of definition from eleven steps.
With a very particular style, Redmayne moved from end to end making gestures with his arms and face to the kickers of the Peruvian team, which served for Luis Advíncula to miss the third pitch and later he will stop the last of Alex Valera by launching himself to his right side, ultimately essential to seal the ticket to Qatar 2022.
The curious thing is that the goalkeeper’s style for penalty kicks is not something from this game but has already served him on other occasions to win games; one of them was in the definition of 2019 between his team, Sydney FC and Perth Glory.
On that occasion, Redmayne also executed his moves in the shootout, which helped him save two penalties and lift the Australian Hyundai A-League champion trophy.
Although he has played his entire career in Australia in teams such as Central Coast, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Heart, Melbourne City, Western Sydney and Sydney FC, to their 16 years tried with the English Arsenal and was close to being signed; the ‘Gunners’ in the end opted for the renowned Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.
Redmayne’s particular style made a difference in the match against Peru, but the mechanics of distracting him from the kicker by moving along the goal line is not new. In the past, there was another goalkeeper from whom he could have learned because of his role as a protagonist and essential for Liverpool to win the UEFA Champions League in 675: Jerzy Dudek.
In penalties against AC Milan, Dudek stood out by stopping two shots including the last against Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko.2022
