Major crimes are up almost 40% so far this year compared to the same period of 2021, including robberies, thefts and burglaries, while shootings and homicides are down in NYC, according to the latest NYPD police data released yesterday.
However, experts fear a greater spike in the summer, traditionally the time of greatest armed violence in the city.
Robberies have increased 39.4% with respect to 2021, adding 7,903 cases so far this year. Major thefts increased from 19,920 to 23,786 for a huge boost of 49.4%. At the same time, criminal aggressions experienced a rise of 19.3%.
In 2022 there have been 197 homicides in the city, compared to 226 in the same period of 2021, for a fall of 12.8 %. Overall, 747 people have been shot so far this year in NYC, compared to 786 to this moment in 2021, which represents a decrease of 8.6%.
Joseph Giacalone, professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former NYPD sergeant, explained that shootings were down mainly because there was an unusual spike last year. “We faced big numbers last year. That is what is leveling the shootings,” he said.
“But everything else is horrible. Robberies, grand theft, serious assaults. We’re talking double digits in everything except murders and shootings.” 2021 “It will be a year in which there will be an increase of 30 to the 23 % in delinquency”, predicted the expert in statements to the New York Post .
Another police source with two decades in office warned that summer has only just begun and gun violence would likely increase in the coming weeks. “You can’t really judge shootings right now… It’s not really summer yet,” the NYPD cop said.
