Pharmacy chain CVS is limiting the amount of emergency contraception such as “Plan B” or “the morning after pill” that customers can buy online and in stores following the Supreme Court decision which annulled the right to abortion at the federal level since last Friday.
The company’s measure seeks equitable access and avoid shortages, according to the CNBC report.
The rationing of Plan B and Aftera, which cost $49.99 and $39.99, respectively, three by order began on Saturday, just hours after the decision of the highest forum .
In the case of Walgreens, the company indicated this Monday that, at the moment, they have not established a purchase limit on these products.
Walmart reported this Tuesday that purchase limits are imposed on many of the products that may change at times when demand fluctuates.
Usually, Emergency contraceptives can be purchased over the counter without the need for a prescription or identification.
The purpose of these pills is prevent ovulation or the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. Women take them after having unprotected sex or after another contraceptive method has failed.
This remedy is different from abortion pills that require a prescription, and two different ones are taken in a period of 10 weeks of gestation.
Last Friday, the conservative majority in the Supreme Court decided that abortion was not protected by the Constitution , so they annulled the “Roe versus Wade” doctrine that legalized the practice since 1973.
From now on, the authorities in each state must determine whether or not to prohibit abortion.
