An English woman believed she was “nine months pregnant” after mistaking an ovarian cyst for a baby, which grew to the size of a football inside her stomach.
Hollie Welham, age 21 believed she was pregnant after she began to feel nauseous and noticed his stomach ‘growing’ in January of 2022.
But when all tests came back negative, Hollie was referred for an ultrasound as her symptoms continued to worsen, including severe cramping, bleeding, and back pain.
Doctors discovered that she wasn’t expecting a baby, but a large cyst was growing on her right ovary and as she awaited surgery to remove it, Hollie watched her stomach ‘grow and grow’ each day.
When he underwent laparoscopic surgery in May 2022, according to Zenger News, the cyst had grown 10.6 inches or 27 cm, i.e. bigger than a football, and Hollie’s stomach swelled due to fluid buildup.
A surgeon at Musgrove Hospital, Taunton, in the west of England, successfully removed the cyst, along with the right ovary and fallopian tube, and Hollie returned to “her normal size.”
Hollie, a health care assistant from Bridgwater, Somerset, said: “At first I thought I was pregnant. All the symptoms pointed towards that because my stomach was getting bigger every day, like a lump.”
“I can’t believe how big my belly got, it looked like she disappeared nine months ago. I couldn’t get into any pants and even the leggings felt too tight and painful on my stomach,” she added.
“I was so uncomfortable, but I am so pleased that they detected the cyst and managed to
remove it”, she concluded.
