Last 27 June, the authorities of San Antonio, Texas, reported the discovery of a trailer with more than 27 crowded immigrants. To date, 51 deaths have been reported, 27 of them Mexicans, four Hondurans and two Guatemalans . The rest of the victims remain unidentified.
While the world fixes its eyes on this disgrace, 14 immigrants , including four children, are struggling to survive.
The news caused hundreds of undocumented immigrants living in the United States to remember the hard time they experienced when crossing into a similar situation.
In an interview with Univision, Guatemalan Lorena said that she came to the US 22 years ago in a situation similar to that of the victims.
“It is something very difficult and critical because it is not easy to come in a truck. We came as 80 people in the year 2000. I felt death”, explained Lorena.
Just like the Hispanics who died inside the box of a trailer supposedly belonging to the Betancourt Trucking company, Lorena and the rest of her compatriots did not bring water and the air was insufficient.
“One has no air, there is no water… one can only shout to be helped”, he recounted.
“ One is between life and death”
Lorena also said that the trip is direct, without stops: “First you take two trucks, to leave Guatemala and when you arrive in Mexico the truck is taken to cross Arizona. Then you have to walk an hour and take another bus to get to the United States”.
In the 2000 Lorena made a trip from 7 to 8 overcrowded hours: “One travels on top of each other, one on top of the other. Men and women go upstairs first. They go screaming because they can’t bear the weight.”
Lorena’s drama worsened at that moment because she was traveling pregnant and felt dehydrated: “But you can’t do anything. One is between life and death”.
Lorena has asked those who plan to arrive in the United States in the conditions in which she arrived to think very carefully, especially if they have children. and they want to travel with them, because as he indicated, the trip is not easy.
