Two members of the coaching staff of a team from the fourth division of Guatemalan soccer were shot to death in an alleged robbery after collecting their respective salaries. This was reported this Wednesday by various sources.

The victims are Ángel Saúl Girón Alvarado and Luis Antonio Hernández Vela, both members of the Rayados GT coaching staff, according to the Guatemalan Football Federation.

“A great sadness overwhelms our soccer family, which is in mourning for such an irreparable loss,” said the federation of the Central American country.

How did the events unfold?

The attack against members of the coaching staff took place on Tuesday in a residential area west of the country’s capital, according to the report of the Volunteer Firefighters. Both were attacked with “multiple impacts from firearm projectiles,” said the firefighters, who transferred one of them alive to a nearby hospital but eventually died.

According to local media, Girón Alvarado and Hernández Vela were assaulted after receiving several months of salary arrears with the team in which they worked. Girón Alvarado was the physical trainer for Rayados GT; while Hernández Vela worked as a technical assistant.

The Rayados GT team, from the department of Guatemala (center), was created a few years ago. It was part of the fourth division of Guatemalan soccer, but recently achieved promotion to the higher category.

According to international organizations, Guatemala is one of the 16 most violent nations in the world. Only between 2010 and 2020 accounted for more than 60, homicides. During 2010, local authorities recorded 4,078 kills in total, 000.5% more than the 3,500 reported in 2010.
