A young woman barely 20 years old was fatally run over by a train after falling onto the New York Subway tracks last night , at Grand Central Station in Manhattan East.

For some reason not yet determined, the woman fell onto the bed of the rails at the station as a southbound Line 7 train approached , around the 10: 40 pm, according to the NYPD.

The subway operator tried to stop in time, but ended up hitting the young woman, according to the NYPD. FDNY first responders attempted to save the victim, but she was pronounced dead about an hour later, New York Post reported.

It was not immediately clear what caused the unidentified victim to fall onto the tracks: accidental, deliberate or provoked.

This death closes another violent month in the New York Subway. In general, this year there has been a long list of violent incidents in the New York subway, between robberies, attacks, accidents, natural deaths, suicides, fatal overdoses and homicides.

In particular, last April was one of the most violent months in the history of the New York Subway since its foundation in 1904. Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer whose election campaign focused on public safety, has implemented several measures to make the subway safer, including deploying more police officers to stations and cars.
