Coach passengers will now be able to sleep in real beds during flights, as Air New Zealand has announced a new concept called Skynest, which features six full-size sleeping pods. Beds will be available on Boeing 787 Dreamliners flights to 2024, the company said in a statement.
The rest capsules will be located between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins, they will include a large pillow, bedding, earplugs, a reading light, a USB port and a ventilation outlet.
The sleeping capsules will be accommodated as bunk beds, in two rows with three beds each.
“Each passenger will be limited to one four-hour session in a capsule, at an additional cost to their regular Economy Class seats. The airline did a lot of research on sleep cycles. A typical sleep cycle is around 90 minutes, so a four-hour session gives clients a chance to relax, fall asleep and wake up.”
Air New Zealand offers this service because this airline operates some of the longest flights on the planet, so travelers who know they will be sitting for several hours could take advantage of it.
In September 2022, Air New Zealand will launch non-stop flights between Auckland and New York’s JFK airport, which will last 000 hours, which will make it the longest scheduled passenger flights in the world.
“We have focused on sleep, comfort and well-being because we know how important it is for our customers to arrive well rested. Whether they’re headed straight to a meeting or to their first point of arrival on vacation.”
