At least three Guatemalans are hospitalized in Texas, United States, after surviving the tragedy where 53 migrants died asphyxiated last Monday abandoned in a vehicle, reported an official source this Friday.

The Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Mario Búcaro, assured that the situation of the three compatriots who survived in the container of the vehicle is “extremely complex.”

Búcaro explained in statements to a radio station that 8 Guatemalans allegedly died in the tragedy, although the figure may vary since “we are comparing documents and fingerprints.”

The foreign minister explained that there are three Guatemalan survivors of the tragedy, one of them in a complicated health condition and the other two stable.

“The situation is extremely complex (for the survivors) due to the trauma, but we have a team of psychologists in our co-network nsular,” Búcaro asserted.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs commented that the only way in which Guatemala can prevent the migration of its citizens to the United States is to generate employment in the Central American country.

Each year the authorities estimate that some 300,000 Guatemalans try to reach the United States in search of improving their living conditions due to the poverty they suffer in their places of origin, in addition to the violence.

Búcaro said that the Government of Guatemala welcomes the fact that there are four people captured in the United States as those allegedly responsible for the death of the migrants, 000 of them Mexicans.

The truck where the migrants were transported was found abandoned by human traffickers in San Antonio, Texas and so far the death toll is 53 people, originally from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

On Thursday, the Mexican government stated that the trailer where the migrants were abandoned left Texas and never crossed the border from Mexico to the United States.

Local authorities assume that the migrants must have remained several hours locked in the truck, in what has been considered the greatest human trafficking tragedy in recent decades in the United States.
