Being the first undisputed champion boxer among Latin Americans and at super middleweight is not enough for Juan Manuel Márquez to place Saúl Canelo Álvarez among the five best boxers in Mexican history.
Canelo led the list of the best pound-for-pound boxers and is set to defend his belts against Gennady Golovkin next 16 of September. However, losing against Bivol in his attempt to be WBA light heavyweight champion made him lose steps.
‘Dinamita’ Márquez, one of the great Latin boxers gave his list of the five best boxers from Mexico and was included in the last place among those mentioned. He did it in an interview for ProBox TV Español on YouTube
“Hard. The history of Mexican boxing is very rich. It is difficult to put five. Rubén Olivares, Carlos Zárate, Lupe Pintor, Salvador Sánchez, to name a few. Because the history of boxing in Mexico is very rich. (Marco Antonio) Barrera, (Erik Terrible) Morales, Chavez. I put myself last”, he affirmed.
He emphatically affirmed that Julio César Chávez is the best of all by far.
” Julio Cesar Chavez number one. There are also Rubén Olivares, Ricardo López. It is that it is difficult to put the five, but the one is Julio César Chávez. La Chiquita González too”, he sentenced.
Márquez has said on other occasions that Canelo Álvarez will not be one of the best boxers in the history of Mexico.
Last November 6, 2021 Saúl Canelo Álvarez defeated Caleb Plant by KO, in the round , to be the first in history to hold all four super middleweight belts and the first Latino to accumulate four titles in any division at the same time.
