The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, signed a bill to restrict the carrying of weapons on Friday in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling on concealed carry laws.

The legislation states that the concealed carrying of weapons in “sensitive places” will be illegal. These “sensitive” cataloged locations refer to public transport, airports, bars, restaurants, theaters, Times Square, among others.

“We are taking swift and bold action for New Yorkers. After a thorough review of the NYSRPA vs. Bruen decision and extensive discussions with constitutional and political experts, advocates, and legislative partners, I am proud to sign this historic legislative package that will strengthen our gun laws and tighten restrictions on concealed carry.” Hochul said in a statement.

The new bill, which will enter into force on 1 September of this year, was signed by Hochul after the New York State Senate approved a law this Friday that will prohibit the concealed carrying of weapons in a “sensitive place”, including Times Square and all mass public transportation.

This bill comes after a Supreme Court ruling struck down a state law that limited who could obtain concealed carry permits to people who had “good cause.”

“Although this ruling issued by the conservative majority of the Supreme Court invalidates the restrictions of the concealed carry permit, the decision allows states to issue license requirements to carry a firearm. In light of this decision, the majority of the Senate is taking action to address the invalidated provisions and counteract the possible effects of this ruling on public safety, “said the Democratic majority of the New York State Senate in a statement.

According to the legislation, sensitive places also include libraries, public playgrounds, public parks, zoos, shelters for the homeless, temples, government buildings, subways and voting centers.

The bill seeks to prohibit the carrying of weapons on all private properties by default, unless the property owner has signs allowing the use of weapons or consents to weapons being allowed.

However, the law makes exceptions for law enforcement , active duty military personnel, law enforcement officers, and persons engaged in lawful hunting, who are it would allow them to carry weapons in sensitive places.

The new law would make carrying weapons in sensitive places a serious crime, reported ABC News.

A statewide license and registration database that was created by the police to determine if a person is no longer a valid license holder. Records must be compared with records of criminal convictions, mental health, criminal charges, protection orders, and extreme risk protection orders.

Furthermore, arms and ammunition dealers and dealers must maintain a record of all your transactions related to weapons and ammunition.

The new legislation amends an existing law that establishes an ammunition database to verify ammunition windows in the state.

The Bill will add a vehicle requirement to existing secure storage laws, requiring gun owners to store their guns in an appropriate secure storage bin out of sight from outside the vehicle, and remove ammunition from the gun.
