Just one day after teammate outfielder Bryan Reynolds hit three homers, Puerto Rican catcher Michael Pérez homered three times to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-7 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pérez put the ball behind the fence in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to lead the Pirates to the second consecutive victory, after a string of five straight losses.
Perez became the third Pirates player to hit three home runs in a game this season along with Reynolds and Jack Suwinski. In addition, he became the second Puerto Rican slugger to hit three home runs in one game. The first was the mythical Roberto Clemente in 1967 and 1969, according to MLB Puerto Rico.
Dominican Oneli Cruz opened the scoring for the Pirates in the second inning with a two-run homer off Brewers starter Adrian Houser, who after the new shortstop’s hit was penalized for a solo homer by Jack Suwinski.
The Brewers were present in the third inning when they scored two returns, on an RBI triple by outfielder Christian Yelich, who then scored a grounder to second baseman Willy Adames.
The visitors continued to attack and managed to tie the actions (3-3) in the fourth chapter by double producer of the Venezuelan Omar Narváez.
Pérez was in charge of responding for the Pirates with his first full-round shot of the game in the closing of that fourth act against reliever Brent Suter ( 1-2), adding two laps to the scoreboard (5-3).
The Mexican Luis Urías would add a lap to the account of the Milwaukee team, with an indisputable producer in the sixth.
Pérez made the Brewers’ pitcher pay again in the sixth act, this time also reliever Jason Alexander, by sending the ball to the deepest of the right field bleachers, towing a teammate who was on the bases.
The Puerto Rican completed his powerful day in the eighth inning, with hitting a four-base stick against the pitches of Dominican right-hander Jandel Gustave.
The Brewers mounted a rebellion in the ninth, when they stepped on the rubber three times, due to a double by Adames, grounded by Rowdy Tellez and a single by Kolten Wong, but Dominican reliever Yerry De Los Santos (2) dominated Urías with a fly ball to center field to end the threat and the game.
JT Brubaker (2-7) pitched six innings of four runs and six strikeouts for stay with the victory.
Suter (1-2) allowed two turns in 2.2 chapters to be defeated by the Brewers.
For the Pirates, Pérez was perfect with the bat in four at-bats, in which he hit three home runs and one hit, with four RBIs and three runs scored; and Cruz hit a home run, drove in two and scored one in four times with the bat.
For the Brewers, Adames went 1-5, scored one and drove in two; Narváez finished 2-1, with an RBI; and Urías failed in five turns, with a push.
